Rugged Field Communication Device

Delivering dependable communication solutions that ensure seamless connectivity and optimal performance where it’s needed most.

Rugged Field Communication Device

This repeat customer needed to rapidly develop a portable networking device that could establish mobile communication in remote or disaster-affected areas. They partnered with our team for development and manufacturing support—relying on our expertise in compact, high-performance communication systems.

Customer Profile

A global provider of defense and emergency response communications equipment, this customer works with government and humanitarian agencies to deliver secure mobile network solutions in high-risk or infrastructure-deficient environments.

Challenge

Establishing fast, secure communication is critical in remote or disaster-stricken areas. This customer had previously worked with our team to build a device that provided secure, single-host cellular communication. Following the success of that solution, the customer wanted to develop a second-generation device that could support communication with multiple hosts—while maintaining compactness, reliability, and security.

Time to market was critical, as the product needed to be field-ready for urgent deployment in defense and emergency aid missions. Based on our proven track record, the customer again entrusted us to lead the end-to-end development and production process for the new device.

Solution Summary

We designed and manufactured a compact processing board powered by our Torpedo + Wireless SoM, enabling secure, multi-host communication in a rugged, field-ready device.

Solution

We developed the central processing board to power the networking device. Building on our earlier collaboration, we worked with the customer to quickly define requirements and start development.

To meet size and performance goals, we recommended our Torpedo + Wireless System-on-Module (SoM) with a cellular modem. The SoM managed processing tasks, initiated communication, and handled incoming calls. Our team designed the schematic and applied high-density layout rules to maintain a compact form factor.

To enhance usability, we integrated two sensors: an ambient light sensor to adjust screen brightness and a proximity sensor to disable the touchscreen when close to the user.

Our software team created verification tests to ensure modem reliability. Once testing confirmed functionality, we moved to rapid prototyping. Our manufacturing team completed board production and delivered a fully tested batch to the customer for final device assembly and further development.

Result

We delivered over 30 functional boards in under six months—meeting the tight development schedule. The final devices are now actively used by both defense personnel and disaster aid agencies. Following this success, the customer returned to our team for additional board manufacturing and future expansion of their product line.
