Advanced Ambulatory Monitors

Streamlining updates for compact medical devices to ensure timely, efficient performance improvements and enhanced patient care capabilities.

Advanced Ambulatory Monitors

A leading medical device innovator partnered with us again to develop their next-gen cardiac monitoring wearable. After successfully using our Torpedo™ + Wireless SoM in the first-gen, they selected our i.MX 8M Mini SoM to enable a smoother upgrade and longer product lifecycle.

Customer Profile

The customer is a leader in wearable cardiac medical devices, combining compact form factors with real-time monitoring and connectivity. Their solutions empower patients and providers with improved visibility, diagnostics, and control over cardiovascular outcomes.

Challenge

The customer needed a compact, wearable device to reliably monitor heart activity and transmit data to healthcare providers. The product also had to meet strict ISO 13485 standards while ensuring patient comfort and discretion. Their first-gen device already used our Torpedo™ + Wireless SoM, which met connectivity and regulatory needs. However, they aimed to proactively upgrade the device to maintain a competitive edge. The challenge: improve performance without redesigning the entire system.

The customer wanted to reuse their existing baseboard and infrastructure to reduce development time and costs. This streamlined, no-rework approach demanded careful planning to maintain form factor compatibility while enabling enhanced functionality and longevity—making embedded system selection and integration a mission-critical task.

Solution Summary

Using our Torpedo SoM and later the i.MX 8M Mini, we delivered a compact, wireless-enabled medical wearable that enables real-time neurological monitoring and seizure detection.

Solution

Recognizing our track record, the customer returned to us to support their upgrade strategy. Our i.MX 8M Mini SoM offered improved processing (up to 1.8 GHz), Wi-Fi 5, and Bluetooth 4.2—ideal for their update. However, the Torpedo™ and i.MX 8M SoMs differed in size and processor architecture.

To solve this, our team designed a custom interposer: an adapter that allowed the new SoM to connect directly to the existing baseboard built for the Torpedo™. This avoided full system redesign, accelerating development and minimizing cost. After evaluating options, the customer approved our plan, and our in-house engineering experts built the interposer to their specifications.

The result was a modernized, high-performance wearable device developed with reduced risk and faster time-to-market. The interposer enabled seamless SoM integration, preserving the customer’s existing hardware while equipping their device with next-gen functionality. Our collaborative engineering approach ensured the update met regulatory, connectivity, and lifecycle goals.

Result

The customer adopted our i.MX 8M Mini SoM and interposer solution, successfully modernizing their device without reworking the system. The upgraded wearable passed all regulatory benchmarks and delivered enhanced performance and connectivity. Our responsive support helped maintain project momentum and transparency. Pleased with the results, the customer continues to work with us on future embedded solutions, strengthening a trusted partnership for long-term innovation.
